There cannot be any doubt that Florida Georgia Line‘s ‘Cruise’ is the song that dominated country music in 2013. It spent a large part of the year taking root at #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart. Darius Rucker‘s unimaginative re-imagining of ‘Wagon Wheel’ follows, ahead of Blake Shelton‘s ‘Boys Round Here.’

If, as I do, you feel that an album of which most songs were promoted to pop radio doesn’t belong on the country charts, then you also consider FGL’s Here’s to the Good Times to be leading the 2013 Country Albums Chart, rather than Taylor Swift‘s Red. It is also worth noting that 33% of this top 10 belongs to Luke Bryan. Whether you consider that to be a good thing depends on your tolerance of his dudebro-country.

Very interesting is the top 10 of the Country Airplay Songs Chart, sorted by chart position. It’s a little hard to grasp given the dominance of ‘Cruise,’ but after the Nielsen BDS radio data is analyzed it is Billy Currington‘s ‘Hey Girl’ that comes out on top. To illustrate how male-dominated the radio waves are, you have to look to #15, and Carrie Underwood‘s ‘See You Again,’ to find the first female solo artist. For shame.
