Sugarland – Live on the Inside DVD (Mercury Records, 2009)

The Live on the Inside CD, reviewed earlier, comes packaged with the first Sugarland live DVD. Filmed a little under a year ago, in Lexington, KY’s Rupp Arena, the Sugarland experience was converted for the screen by director Shaun Silva. His frantic use of close-ups is a little distracting at first but the camera calms down to reveal a live show the way you could never experience it from the crowd.

The understated opening ‘Love’ provides blasts open to oversized beach balls, glow sticks and soap bubbles. And to a whole lot of total, unadulterated fun!

The show is built up really well, bringing songs in blocks of up-tempo and nice ‘n’ slow. My personal favorite section is the middle act of ‘Already Gone’-‘Steve Earle’-‘Genevieve’-‘All I Want to Do’. Crowd interaction is high and about as fun as it gets when Jennifer and Kristian take a ‘stroll’ over the crowd, and I mean that literally.

With minimal stage props and no elaborate wardrobe changes, this show stands on the strength of the songs and the mighty voice of perpetually effervescent Jennifer. Kristian’s creativity and energy are endless. With the exception of a little bit of ‘Nightswimming’, the only cover here is a stunning ‘The One I Love’ where Kristian gets to silence the doubters regarding his place in Sugarland.

If you don’t feel like going out but don’t exactly want to have a quiet night in, this DVD can provide you with just the party you need!

This DVD accompanies the ‘Live on the Inside’ CD which was reviewed previously.
