“How dare you have different values than me?”

Travis Tritt is upset.

Because Tim McGraw, among others, has different values than he does. You see, Tim is headlining a concert for an organization called Sandy Hook Promise, which was founded by family members who lost a loved one in the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.

Here’s the thing about values: we all prioritize different things.

Tim McGraw’s fiddle player, Dean Brown, is a close friend of Mark Barden, whose young child was killed during the shooting. Dean wants to support his friend Mark; Tim wants to support his friend Dean. Maybe McGraw values friendship and compassion over whether or not he shares political opinions with his colleagues, or even his audience.

The organization’s mission statement reads:

Our sole purpose is to protect children from gun violence by providing and empowering parents and communities with mental wellness and gun safety programs that help identify, intervene and stop at-risk individuals from hurting themselves or others so no other parent experiences the senseless, horrific loss of their child.

No matter which 2nd Amendment interpretation you subscribe to, how does anyone oppose this?

I sincerely hope Travis Tritt doesn’t either.

But on the Breitbart website – a place quite unmoored from reality – this event is turned into a “gun control fundraiser,” reported on complete with “law-abiding citizen” dog whistle, and Tritt flipped out over McGraw’s involvement.

And people wonder why there is less and less reasoned dialogue in the media…

This isn’t a “both sides of the issue” thing. If the organization states that its “sole purpose is to protect children from gun violence,” do you really want to be on the opposite side of that?

So, for those who wish to support Sandy Hook Promise, you can do so here.
