A slow climb up the charts and a song that endures after it has reached its chart peak, these are the elements that help radio hits onto the Billboard Top 30 Country Songs Chart of 2012. Josh Turner‘s ‘Time Is Love’ leads the chart having never topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs list. When it comes to longevity at country radio, it’s not all about getting to that #1 spot. Brantley Gilbert‘s ‘You Don’t Know Her Like I Do’ did top the chart and makes it to #2 here, followed by Jana Kramer‘s ‘Why Ya Wanna,’ which topped out at #3 during the year as well. Three other not-#1 hits follow, all songs which I believe will last at radio much longer than most 2012 chart-toppers: Dustin Lynch‘s debut ‘Cowboys and Angels,’ Gloriana‘s magnificent ‘(Kissed You) Good Night,’ and Tim McGraw‘s introspective ‘Better than I Used to Be.’

Also of note is that Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney are the only two established acts in the Top 15, everyone else rose to prominence only in the last two to three years. The changing of the guards at country radio is nearly complete.

And it would be remiss of me not mentioning the achievement of Keith Urban‘s ‘You Gonna Fly’ which lands at #23!
