At the 85th Academy Awards®, to be held in Los Angeles on February 24, 2013, it could be Keith Urban who picks up an Oscar for the Urban household mantlepiece this time. His song, ‘For You,’ penned with Monty Powell for the soundtrack of the motion picture, Act of Valor, is among the songs in the running for a final nomination.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has identified 75 songs which are eligible for an Oscar nomination this year. According to the strictly enforced rules, to be eligible the song had to be written specifically for the movie, consist of original words and music, and be heard during the movie or as the first track in the end credits.

‘For You’ is up against mighty competition. Also eligible are Bon Jovi’s ‘Not Running Anymore’ from upcoming film, Stand Up Guys, and ‘Skyfall’ by Adele and Paul Epworth, written for the James Bond movie of the same name. Additionally, Neil Finn, one of my favorite songwriters, composed the ‘Song of the Lonely Mountain’ theme for The Hobbit: an Unexpected Journey, which is likely to be a highly nominated movie.

Members of the Music Branch of the Academy will now be serviced with DVD copies of songs clips and get the chance to vote for their favorites. In a change from last year, five songs will compete for the famous golden statue so hopefully the 85th Academy Awards® will go a little bit country.
