Ray Lamontagne’s ethereal voice could never disappoint. Even if you’re not familiar with his latest album, Supernova, his performance will take your breath away. This is fact. The proof ? Last week I had the privilege of attending his concert at The Orpheum in Memphis, Tennessee.

The majority of this show focuses on Supernova, but he also performs classics such as ‘Trouble’ and ‘Repo Man.’ During his acoustic performance of ‘Jolene’ you could hear a pin drop. The audience was simply that transfixed.

Ray’s latest album, produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, has a whimsical, mysterious sound. You can definitely pick up on Dan’s influences, but it does not overshadow Ray as an artist.

The lyrical whispering and island rhythm of ‘Airwaves’ lulls. It’s a sexy lullaby. You might say to yourself, “Is that even possible?” It absolutely is. And of course, in true Ray fashion, this song has got soul.

‘Pick Up a Gun’ is a song about unrequited love. To me, it seems it’s about being driven to the edge by the act of loving someone who doesn’t love you back. We’ve all been in that situation at some point in our lives; Ray just possesses the ability to turn it into something greater, something more lovely than disheartening.

Who knew singing the words, “I never want to see your face again,” could be so calmingly beautiful?

Part of Ray’s band is made up of the talented group The Belle Brigade, a brother and sister musical duo based in Los Angeles. The Belle Brigade is also the supporting act for Ray’s show. Be sure not to miss them, they’re a real treat.

Supernova is solid gold. It’s rare to find an album loaded down with such perfection. Every song from track one to track ten is sure to captivate. His show assuredly mimics that same enthrallment.

Ray’s tour continues through November. Find out if he’s coming to a city near you.
