Songwriters: Mary Lambert, MoZella, Eric Rosse, Benny Cassette

Mary Lambert burst onto the pop scene when she was featured on Macklemore’s 2013 smash hit ‘Same Love.’ Since then, she has worked on her own new studio album, Heart on My Sleeve, due via Capitol on October 14, 2014. She spent the summer on the road with Gavin DeGraw and Matt Nathanson, and continues to do well with radio listeners.

Her new single, ‘Secrets,’ takes the title of the new album to heart and holds nothing back. In a true songwriting-is-therapy effort, Lambert bares some truths and totally disarms herself.

“I’ve got bi-polar disorder / my shit’s not in order,” the song states at the start. She goes on to describe a whole range of things, big and small, from her dysfunctional family to her love of cat earrings.

Her talk-rhythm delivery is perfect for such a confessional, as is the sass with which she expresses herself. Though her confidence shines through, she maintains an honest and vulnerable performance by keeping it just ever so slightly off-pitch.

The stock advice for young songwriters is to “write what you know,” and songs like this show why. Brutal honesty, discovering through a song that you are not the only one going through something difficult, is what attracts us to the truly great artists.

At 25, Lambert still has much to discover about herself, but I hope that she will continue to share it in her music!
