The 48th ACM Awards Nominations Announced, Eric Church Leads with Seven

This morning, the Academy of Country Music announced the nominations for the 48th Annual ACM Awards. April 7 could be Eric Church‘s day, the singer leads with seven nominations (but strangely misses out on an Entertainer of the Year nom). Hunter Hayes got six nods, and Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift heard their named called five times each.

The biggest award of the night, Entertainer of the Year, will be fought over by the winner of the previous two years, Taylor Swift; the show’s hosts, Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan; Miranda Lambert and Jason Aldean.

While the Male Vocalist of the Year category is pretty standard, it does feel like the inclusion of Toby Keith is more a gesture to separate themselves from the CMA Awards than anything else, and it fills a space that could have gone to Dierks Bentley or Lee Brice who had #1 hits in the eligibility period. A real surprise is the inclusion of Kacey Musgraves in the Female Vocalist of the Year category. She is a tremendous vocalist but only just released her debut single a few months ago. This seems to be a damning statement of how few women really break through in country music that this needs to happen to fill a category.

Producer Jay Joyce sees two of his projects got up against each other for Album of the Year as Little Big Town‘s Tornado and Eric Church’s Chief take on Taylor Swift’s Red, Carrie Underwood‘s Blown Away, and Luke Bryan’s Tailgates & Tanlines.

In the category honoring songwriters, the trio behind ‘Springsteen,’ Eric Church, Ryan Tyndell and Jeff Hyde, are up against the trio behind Lee Brice‘s ‘A Woman Like You,’ Phil Barton, Johnny Bulford and Jon Stone. Will Hoge and Eric Paslay are nominated for Eli Young Band‘s ‘Even if it Breaks Your Heart,’ Lambert and Shelton for Lambert’s ‘Over You,’ and Hunter Hayes and Troy Verges for ‘Wanted.’

The well-chosen Songwriter of the Year nominees are all heavy hitmen of Music Row and anyone of the group, Rodney Clawson, Dallas Davidson, Josh Kear, Luke Laird, and Shane McAnally, would be a deserved winner.

The show will be hosted by Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan and take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 7, 2013. The live broadcast from 8:00 pm ET the CBS Network.
