Alan Jackson has released a third single, ‘You Go Your Way,’ from his Thirty Miles West album.
‘You go your way/and I’ll go crazy’ ends the chorus, but Jackson’s telling of this tale reveals not a hint of any descent into ‘crazy.’ Instead, we get a matter-of-fact performance concealing some slight snarkiness throughout, and not concealing cynicism in the second verse. It can be read as if the guy in previous single, ‘So You Don’t Have to Love Me Anymore,’ had a few beers, cast off his martyr mantle, and realized it’s not so bad after all.
Jackson has resisted the urge to hustle for “radio relevance” and hasn’t joined the current wave of rock-based country. Long-time producer Keith Stegall keeps the fiddle front and center, and steel colors the arrangement more than any other instrument.
It might not be a classic, but ‘You Go Your Way’ is a solid piece of old-school country music from one of the genre’s best exponents.
