Jake Owen‘s early career involved singles which, if not exactly deep material, still held a quirky quality which made them his own. With his latest album, Barefoot Blue Jean Night, that has drifted even more to unchallenging, easily digestible radio songs. He has now started collecting #1 trophies, so who am I to say he and his team are wrong? New single, ‘Anywhere with You,’ is a perfect example. It is a song which carries no greater message than ‘I like you,’ but it does it well.
Smitten with the girl, the protagonist is unconcerned with their next destination as long as she is by his side. Suggestions are offered in the two verses, from living in a holler to hiding in a ghost town, and the chorus has the essence of the story:
Pick a spot on any old map
I travel light and my bags are packed
Just as long as I’m where you’re at
I’m gonna have a real good view
I’ll go anywhere, anywhere with you
The song got a pleasant country-rock treatment which equally doesn’t challenge the listener at all, and Owen is having fun just relaxing into this lyric without making more of it than it should be. ‘Anywhere with You’ is happy to just be an enjoyable song that will help brighten up the winter radio waves.
And sometimes that is absolutely all that a song needs to be.
‘Anywhere with You’ will impact radio on February 11, 2013.
