‘Don’t Let Me Be Lonely’ is the third single from The Band Perry’s sophomore Republic Nashville album, Pioneer.
While the first two singles, ‘Better Dig Two’ and ‘Done,’ have a rough, darker sound, ‘Don’t Let Me Be Lonely’ is truly just nothing special. The Band Perry’s familiar edge is mysteriously absent from this one.
The latest single can be appreciated for what it is – a laid-back love ballad about living in the moment. However, one thing it isn’t is The Band Perry.
Ordinarily there’s fervor behind Kimberly Perry’s voice. With this particular tune, I simply have a hard time believing her. To me, it feels as though they went in the studio and just wanted to get this song over with.
That feeling isn’t associated with the quality of the song itself, as it is clearly of great quality. It’s more a feeling that their heart isn’t in this one.
“So don’t let me be, let me be, let me be lonely tonight / While we’re young and alive / Take the keys to my car and the keys to my heart and just drive.”
Again, the lyrics, the melody, and the song are not my problem. It’s not a bad song. The real reason that I’m not thrilled with this single is that I expect more from The Band Perry. They are known for a more unique sound. Their music is usually quite inimitable.
In fact, when I hear a The Band Perry song I immediately think to myself, “Yeah. That’s The Band Perry.”
Well, ‘Don’t Let Me Be Lonely’ barely makes me think at all. What it does make me think is, “Who are they and what have they done with The Band Perry?”
