If it is possible to be a fan of a record label, then I can be considered a huge fan of Vanguard and Sugar Hill Records. Both labels are home to some of my very favorite songwriters (Rodney Crowell! Matt Nathanson!) so I highly recommend this free* download on offer via noisetrade.com.
Up for grabs are nine top quality acoustic songs, recorded live in Nashville during Americana Fest in September 2012 and each one is worth hearing. Rodney Crowell is his usual brilliant self on the sweet ballad ‘God I’m Missing You,’ and Joey + Rory find unexpected love on ‘Waiting for Someone.’ Deep Dark Woods contributes a weary soldier’s account of the Battle of the Scheldt during the Second World War on ‘Banks of the Leopold Canal,’ incredibly impressive stuff, and if you need cheering up after that you can count on Shawn Mullins‘ ‘Sunshine,’ and Sam Bush‘s worldclass mandolin interlude on ‘Watson Allman.’
The Americana Sessions track listing:
1. ‘Weird Winter’ – Brian Wright
2. ‘Ring Them Bells’ – Sarah Jarosz
3. ‘Banks of the Leopold Canal’ – Deep Dark Woods
4. ‘God I’m Missing You’ – Rodney Crowell
5. ‘Waiting for Someone’ – Joey + Rory
6. ‘Sunshine’ – Shawn Mullins
7. ‘Gone Gonna Rise Again’ – Kathy Mattea
8. ‘Watson Allman’ – Sam Bush
9. ‘The Bald Headed Judge’ – Dirk Powell
