Last night, January 23, 2013, country singer and songwriter Chris Janson and his band took to the stage at Nashville’s Silver Dollar Saloon for what felt like a victory lap. After years of some very hard work, Janson released his debut single, ‘Better I Don’t’ to country radio this week.
In 2012, Janson secured his first major artist cut, and he did it in style. He co-wrote Tim McGraw‘s Big Machine debut, ‘Truck Yeah,’ a top 10 hit. In the years prior, he perfected his performing skills with countless stage hours in Nashville honky-tonks. And it shows. He directs his band like a maestro conductor in front of a symphony, with his talented sidemen able to quickly adjust to the improvisations. It affords this band a spontaneity that makes for a truly exciting live show.
With a set list that encompassed everything from old-school country to modern, good-timin’ party tunes, Janson pumped more and more energy into the room with every passing minute. After ‘White Trash’ kicked off the show, and he held his ‘Redneck Revival,’ he proudly presented his new radio single, ‘Better I Don’t.’ For the moving ‘When I’m Holding Her,’ he brought out his co-writer, James Otto, and played what must be the theme song of many tourists on Broadway, ‘Hey Hey, My Money’s All Gone.’ And he of course couldn’t leave the stage without a stomping version of ‘Truck Yeah.’ The set was closed with a medley of classics including ‘Always on My Mind,’ with him sounding like a young Willie Nelson, ‘Family Tradition,’ ‘Get Rhythm,’ and the fastest rendition of ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ I have heard.
Rather than try to describe the indescribable, check out the videos below of the new single, ‘Better I Don’t,’ and ‘When I’m Holding Her.’
