If you didn’t already know, Jason Isbell‘s new album, Something More than Free, is excellent.

Having dealt with what he needed to deal with on Southeastern, this record is less heavy, but just as introspective, curious, and honest.

The first single, ’24 Frames,’ is a bit of an obsession of mine right now. It’s an extraordinary song, in which Isbell reminds himself of staying grounded in the moment, and of how to work on being the person he wants to be.

It’s also evidence that a thoughtful, smart song can still be damn catchy. Recently, on my way to a James Taylor show I had ’24 Frames’ stuck in my head. After spending 2 hours listening to Taylor and his many hits, I left the venue humming…’24 Frames.’

Much more importantly, Isbell’s (and many others’) music shows that all those whining about how “Nashville” doesn’t produce great music anymore, need to stop expecting to be spoon-fed by commercial radio, and make the effort to seek out albums like Something More than Free. Great music is everywhere. Really. You just need to work a bit more to find certain kinds than others.

Last week, he visited Conan and performed the song live. Click on the image to enjoy!
