Trio Lady Antebellum took time off from touring this summer and spent time in the studio instead. The group is preparing a deluxe edition of latest album, Golden, (out November 12) which will include new single, ‘Compass.’

With a folk-pop treatment, ‘Compass’ gives encouragement and advise to get through life’s ups and downs. Hillary and Charles exchange the vocal spotlight as they remind you not to give up and to follow your heart:

“Let your heart, sweet heart
Be your compass when you’re lost
And you should follow it wherever it may go
When it’s all said and done
You can walk instead of run
‘Cause no matter what you’ll never be alone”

Lots of fiddle, mandolin, and banjo, combined with a steady beat and hand claps, creates an earthy sound popularized again in recent year by acts like Mumford & Sons and The Lumineers. Nathan Chapman’s arrangement is bold and cheerful, and works very well in the verses. But the mix is a bit of a mess, especially in the choruses. Hillary barely climbs above the clutter and Charles and Dave’s harmonies are all but drowned out. I understand needing to mix things for radio but the chorus is simply too loud here.

‘Compass’ will hit country radio in the next few weeks, ahead of the release of the Golden deluxe edition.
