When Sara Evans titled her latest album, Slow Me Down, her record label seemed to have taken this as a challenge. RCA waited a long time to announce a second single from the project, then sent ‘Can’t Stop Loving You’ to radio only to pull it after not actually promoting it.

Now, Sara gets to try again with ‘Put My Heart Down.’

“I never pictured us ever fighting this much / Thought we were figured out but it’s so messy now / Your words they cut so deep and I think that you should leave,” she plainly lays it out for her lover at the start of the song. Throughout, her vocal performance continues to express both the assuredness and sadness of the main character.

The song is pleasantly reminiscent of the type of material that made Sara Evans a star in the early 2000s. Mark Bright updated the arrangement to be more in line with the prevalent tastes of radio listeners, but rendered it slightly too sterile. While it still fits the song, it also feels at odds with Evans’ warm, authentic vocal.

I truly hope that Sara Evans can one day return to the top tier of the country charts, a place currently all but inaccessible to female singers not named Carrie or Miranda. But unless RCA is willing to throw everything they have behind this release, it sadly will probably not be with this song.
