Little Big Town is finishing out the successful Tornado album era with the midtempo ‘Sober.’
The song draws the oft-used comparison of love as intoxication, but befitting the songwriting talent of Liz Rose, Hillary Lindsey, and Lori McKenna, manages to say it in a way we haven’t quite heard before.
For the first time, Kimberly Schlapman takes lead vocal on a single. But the quartet’s signature four-part harmony is never far away and helps lift up the gorgeous chorus:
“‘Cause I love being in love
It’s the best kind of drug
Drunk on the high, leanin’ on your shoulder
Sweeter like a wine as it gets older
When I die I don’t wanna go sober”
The song is wrapped in a warm but lean arrangement, and with not a lot of music filling in the background, this is all about the vocals. Never a bad thing with this group.
‘Sober’ could restore LBT’s success at radio after the disappointing run of ‘Your Side of the Bed’ (which, though a great song, was simply released at the wrong time of year).
