I’ve been a Lucero fan for quite some time. So when I saw they were listed as part of the line-up for this year’s Delta Country Jam alongside acts such as Florida Georgia Line and Cole Swindell, I was a little confused. Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate all three artists. But Lucero doesn’t exactly fit in with ‘This Is How We Roll’ or ‘Chillin’ It.’

In any event, they were part of the schedule and I was excited about it. However I was also worried about how the rest of the audience would react to them. Lead singer Ben Nichols is no Keith Urban with his raspy voice, James Dean persona and not-so-bubblegum lyrics.

Much to my surprise, the crowd loved them. Now, I am using the term “crowd” lightly. The audience did not fill up until later in the day when Brett Eldredge took the stage. But the handful of folks who were there began dancing and even singing along. With the festival only miles from Lucero’s hometown in Memphis, TN, assuredly loyal fans came out in support.

Known for always being excellent live performers, the boys of Lucero proved that status once again at Delta Country Jam with classics such as ‘Drink Til’ We’re Gone’ and ‘On My Way Downtown.’

“This song is called ‘Women & Work,’ but it’s actually about whiskey,” Ben laughed. Whatever the song is about, the audience loved it. A horns section was a welcome addition to the stage. However, they took a seat while Ben performed ballads such as ‘Mom’ and ‘Nights Like These.’

Lucero was to Delta Country Jam what Kevin Bacon was to Footloose. You know, the new guy at school who’s different, who dresses kind of funny, and who ends up saving an entire town with his dance moves. Yeah, just like that.
