Single Review – Christmas Eve – Rachel Holder

Rachel Holder has released her holiday single, ‘Christmas Eve,’ to radio. In the song she sings with fairly contained excitement about how she can’t wait ‘to spend this special time of year with someone who makes me feel the special way’ the object of her affection does. The lyrics aren’t very strong and drift close to cliched in places and they offer no details about the people in it, making them just another generic couple in a song rather than real characters.
But the tune is saved by the production and Rachel’s performance. The song is driven forward by soft precussion, unassuming steel in the background and, of course, plenty of Christmas bells to cheer you up. It’s a slight shame the fiddle doesn’t carry on through the song though. Choosing not to join the trend of belting out the biggest note you can find in each song, Rachel stays firmly in the range where she sounds strongest. It makes for a solid performance with as the only slight downside that there wasn’t much room for her to really let the joy ring through her interpretation.
‘Christmas Eve’ may not join the ranks for Christmas classics but it’s uplifting and uncomplicated as a holiday song should be.
