Put on your disco shoes kids, because Love And Theft is back, coming on the heels of their smash single, ‘Angel Eyes,’ with their new song, ‘Running Out of Air.’

I say disco shoes, because after the opening snare crack, that’s what we’ve got; a solid slinky groove and a rhythmic vocal that would make the Gibb brothers proud. It’s well done and a different sound than you’re likely used to for a country band (the only other example that comes to mind of a more recent track to utilize a disco/funk sound is Hot Apple Pie’s ‘Hillbillies In The Hay’ and that was a while ago.)  The structure of the track is a bit different than your average song, which makes things interesting. You think you’re headed to the chorus when the vocals get more rhythmic in the verse, but they make you wait a second. And when the chorus finally does hit, you get that payoff. From the tight background vocals, the chiming guitars and piano, and the crystal clear lead vocals, the arrangement and production on this track is top notch.

The song itself isn’t bad. It’s definitely enhanced by its production, and almost sounds like something you might have heard the Backstreet Boys cut at one point, which is definitely not a bad thing. The lyrics aren’t going to stop you in your tracks, but I don’t think that’s really the point here. The melodies are good, not amazing, but they’re sung well, showcasing Eric Gunderson and Stephen Barker Liles’ excellent vocal blend as a male duo. At a time when male/female duos are all the rage, I think Love And Theft could carve out a niche for themselves as a male duo on the more pop/country side of things.

I don’t like this song as much as I liked ‘Angel Eyes,’ but it’s still a pretty solid and fun single with a good beat to it. And I can just picture John Travolta dancing to it…
