When Billboard first complied the Top Country Albums Chart in 1964, they were just in time. The Beatles were just about to land in America and the music industry would start to change from a singles-driven business to one focusing on albums. That the pendulum has swung back to singles is evidenced by the fact that only two regular album released since 2000 made their way into the ‘most weeks at #1’ list, and both were major cross-over hits which arguably sold more copies to pop than country fans, Lady Antebellum‘s Need You Now, and Taylor Swift‘s Fearless.

For the chart anniversary, Billboard compiled three lists. The album that spent the most weeks at #1 is Shania Twain‘s Come On Over. Not surprisingly, the artist who occupied the top spot the highest number of weeks is Garth Brooks, who spent an astonishing 160 weeks at #1. And finally, the artist who celebrated the most #1 album is George Strait, with 25 chart-toppers.
