Nashville-based Americana duo Bedhed and Blondy have readied their third album, Down South. The 9-track disc was produced by Charlie Chadwick and is available now via CD Baby.

You can read more in the press release below:

“Fran and I have been calling our new sound ‘Neo South,’” explains Jay Studdard, one half of the coed Americana duo Bedhed and Blondy. “It’s a mix of blues, southern rock, pop, rock, alt country, and folk.”

The title of Down South, Studdard’s third album with songwriting partner and vocalist Fran Jackson, speaks for itself. After making their debut with an acoustic record, 2010‘s Somewhere in Memphis, and electrifying their 2011 follow-up, Nuthin’, with a full band, the two musicians have returned to their Southern roots. The result is an album that blends the basic ingredients of Bedhed and Blondy’s sound — gorgeously entwined harmonies, pastoral melodies, honest lyrics — with a healthy dose of Southern stomp and Bible Belt boogie.

Although Down South was recorded at Nashville’s OGM Studio with producer Charlie Chadwick, Studdard — the group’s primary songwriter — had Georgia on his mind the entire time.

“Down South came out of a bunch of things I remember about growing up in middle Georgia,” he says. “The things my parents would say, the things I was expected to do or not do… It’s very autobiographical. The motivation for most of these songs came from personal experiences. It’s a complicated world, and we tend to only complicate it more most of the time, which makes for lots of good material to write about.”

“Rain” is about contradiction; claiming not to believe in God while blaming him for everything. “Lullabye” is about the universal need for comfort and reassurance. Jackson penned “You Win” about a friend who seemed oblivious to his being a condescending drag. And the bluesy title track takes the listener far below the Mason Dixon line, setting its nostalgic lyrics to a soundtrack of swirling organ and swampy guitar riffs.

Down South marks a new milestone for Bedhed and Blondy, who’ve never sounded as comfortable as they do on these nine songs.
