‘Five Spot EP’ – Craig Campbell (Bigger Picture, 2010)

While in recent years country radio’s focus has been on pop-country, there is still lots of traditional country music being made. Having learned his craft in the South Georgia honky tonks, Craig Campbell relocated to Nashville, did a stint in Tracy Byrd‘s band and landed himself a residency spot at The Stage on Lower Broadway. Soon noticed by Bigger Picture Group’s Michael Powers and top producer Keith Stegall, Craig started work on new songs. A full album is forthcoming later in the year, but available now is a 5-track preview, the ‘Five Spot EP’. With the quality of these songs, Craig Campbell could be situated somewhere between Alan Jackson and Clint Black.

First single, ‘Family Man’,  is traditional country in all the right ways. (you can find the single review here) The family theme continues on ‘My Little Cowboy’ where, in a classic country songwriting trick, advise from his own father gets turned into advise for his son. There is also room for whimsy and humour; from the defiant na-na-nas in ‘When I Get It’ to the twist in the tail of ‘I Bought It’. The EP closes with, ‘Chill-Axin”, a mellow ode to doing absolutely nothing.

With Craig’s old school country voice singing about old school country themes, the ‘Five Spot EP’ is a great collection and shows the upcoming full CD will have been worth waiting for.
