Sugarland – Live on the Inside CD (Mercury Records, 2009)

Sugarland‘s Jennifer and Kristian have been some of the hardest working artists out there and their reputation has been built mainly on the strength of their live performances. One thing that has made their live production stand out has been the inclusion of some of the most diverse covers heard at a country show.

Those covers, as well as some of their own hits, are what this ‘Live on the Inside’ CD is all about. It starts with show-opener ‘Love’ which is less bombastic and more heartfelt than on the ‘Love on the Inside’ record it’s taken from. ‘All I Want to Do’, ‘Joey’ and the ever-stunning ‘Stay’ make up the rest of the home-grown tracks. The rest of the disc is packed with countrified versions of big hits and it is here that the duo demonstrates their skill. Any act that can take songs as diverse as Kings of Leon’s ‘Sex on Fire’, Beyoncé’s ‘Irreplaceable’ and the B52s’ ‘Love Shack’ and convince you, is talented beyond question. ‘Circle’, ‘The One I Love’ and a wonderful rendition of ‘Better Man’ complete this collection of live recordings.

Some people might have preferred the live CD to be an audio version of the Sugarland live show but I think this is much more special. This is disc adds to the live DVD it accompanies rather than repeat it. With a CD of this quality whether you are a Sugarland fan or not (heck, even whether you are a country music fan or not) is almost irrelevant; this is an extraordinary collection from extraordinary talent.
