You Can’t Stop Me – Lyndsey Highlander (APA, July 2012)

UCN-rank-4

Lyndsey Highlander is a country artist originating from New Kent, Virginia who has been described as “combining the soul of Patsy Cline with the rock ‘n’ roll of Bonnie Raitt.” Both of these musical influences can be heard in her debut EP titled You Can’t Stop Me.

If you are looking for a rocking-good-time-party album, this is not the album for you. However, if you need a girlfriend who knows how it feels to have a broken heart, to love the wrong guy, and to have daddy tell you that that boy is nothing but trouble and to stay away from him, this is definably an album that you want to check out. Lyndsey co-wrote all the songs on this EP, so it is a safe bet that she is writing from experience.

The EP starts out with a good stick it to the guy who broke your heart song (‘Flowers Ain’t Gonna Fix This’), which is a slower tempo song but has a rock influence in the instrumentation. The EP title, ‘You Can’t Stop Me’ is a little more up-tempo and tells the story or a woman in love with a man who doesn’t love her and is leaving, a good heartbreak song. ‘Slow Dance’ is another slow tempo song with a definite classic country influence. This is where the Patsy Cline influence can be heard in Lyndsey’s voice. This song gets a definite thumbs-up from me. ‘Deep Trouble’ is the classic “girl likes country boy, country boy likes girl, daddy hates country boy because he’s no good for his daughter” song, one which just about every girl out there has been able to relate to at one point or another. ‘Too Long To Live With You’ is a great song about a woman who has been broken down in spirit and heart because she has fallen for the wrong man; a man who does her nothing but wrong. Lyndsey closes out her debut EP with a slow, melancholy song about a woman who is so broken down and defeated that there is nothing left for anyone to break anymore (‘Handle A Heartache’). The song opens with just an acoustic guitar that sets the mood for the remainder of the song.

You Can’t Stop Me is a good debut EP that shows Lyndsey is a strong contender for success, and that, indeed, it will be hard to stop her.
