2013 was not a great year for album sales. The advance of on-demand services and personalized radio further nibbled at already low sales figures. While there was a 8.4% decline in album sales overall compared to 2012, country album sales dropped by 10.7%. The sale of individual songs was down 1.6% overall, with again country harder hit with a 2% drop in sales compared to 2012.

All this despite Luke Bryan‘s top-selling album, Crash My Party, and Florida Georgia Line‘s multi-genre monster, ‘Cruise.’

Garth Brooks wouldn’t be Garth Brooks if he didn’t manage to buck the trend. His five-disc project, Blame It All on My Roots: Five Decades of Influences, clocked up almost 800k sales in only its first month, having been released at Thanksgiving. But conversely, Keith Urban, who had been a pretty strong album artist, barely shifted over 100k of his latest, Fuse, in its first two months. And that’s with the additional American Idol exposure. Ouch.
