Thank you Urban Country Blog for allowing Colleen and me to submit a review for Jimmy Wayne. Colleen did a great job with capturing the spirit of the night and the great show Jimmy gave us. Enjoy.

My daughter and I set off from the Twin Cities about 2:30 Friday afternoon. After a long week it was great to be going on a JW Road Trip to Iowa with my daughter and to see my friend June. I’ve never seen Jimmy Wayne in concert but I love his music and I’ve been following his journey from Nashville to Phoenix. We got to June’s, freshened up and then on our way to see JW-at the historic Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake,IA. But first we had to eat dinner. HMMM…where to go? We finally settled on Bennigan’s. After we sat down, I looked across the way and at a table about 10 feet away from us sat JW!!!! I wasn’t sure so I asked June to take a look. We knew it was him for sure when we looked at the logo on his blue stocking cap. I had the best view! I wish I could have taken a picture but I didn’t want to be too rude. But he sure was nice to look at during dinner.

On to the Surf: Doors opened at 8PM and we got there shortly after that. Just walking into the Surf and seeing all the history on the walls made me awestruck! It’s a big ballroom with booths surrounding the edge of the dance floor. And there weren’t a lot of people there-I was surprised. We had decided to reserve a booth and it was just to the left of the stage – all that was between us and the stage was the sound board. We had a pretty good view. And we were able to move around and stand on the floor if we wanted to. Jimmy came out onstage and signed autographs before the concert started.

Time for the concert. The opening act was a group called Hitchville. They’re a Twin Cities band and they were good. I’ve never seen them before but I’ll be watching for them now. The lead singer resembled Jimmy Wayne a little bit. They opened with a Keith Urban song – Who Wouldn’t Want to Be Me – so they had me hooked right away! They did some Lady A, LBT, Jason Aldean. They played for an hour-a little too long for me. I wanted to see Jimmy! During intermission we could see him occasionally through he little door on the stage.

After about a half hour intermission – time for Jimmy!!! Jimmy had a cold but he didn’t sing or act like it. June was able to get the setlist so you can see the songs he sang. The show lasted about an hour and a half. No encore. He sang and did a little dancing – he definitely has some cute dance moves. My daughter said he makes the cutest faces when he sings. During his third song – Over You – he decided to go body surfing!!! The first attempt didn’t go so well so he tried again and this time he made it through the crowd and back onto the stage. That was fun to watch! During “Stay Gone” he really encouraged the crowd to sing along and they did a pretty good job. He talked about his walk and encouraged people to donate to it. He also talked a little about his teenage years. It was really hard to hear what he was saying though. He ended the show with “Where You’re Going”. It was an awesome concert! After the show, Jimmy came out and signed autographs and took pictures with everyone who was there. What a great guy! My daughter and I stayed overnight and headed home the next afternoon.

It was a perfect trip – friends, family and great music!…

Colleen.
