Hunter Hayes will be attending the GRAMMY Awards as a nominee tonight, something I’m sure he’ll need to let sink in as he arrives. The 21-year-old saw his career accelerate at warp speed in the last two years but he is showing remarkable poise after everything that’s happened to him.

As he gets ready for music’s biggest night, Billboard magazine caught up with him to ask how he will be preparing. His answers attest to his maturity and level-headedness.

And to his good taste.

Asked what will be the first thing he will do on the day, he replied: “Find the nearest Starbucks.” I totally understand. As to what he will be wearing, always a topic of discussion on any red carpet, he offered: “I’m definitely wearing a suit, but with Converse Chuck Taylors. Converse adds the subtle chill factor – that’s how I know I’m being me and not anybody else.” As someone who lives in Chuck Taylors, I now have my response ready the next time someone asks me why. The subtle chill factor.

Hayes is nominated in three categories, Best New Artist, Best Country Solo Performance for ‘Wanted,’ and Best Country Album for his debut release, and he stands a pretty good chance of ending the night with at least one of those to his name. Even if his country-flavored pop music is not your thing, it’s great to see young super talent like this get recognized and I wish him luck tonight!
