One of my favorite Texas acts, JB and the Moonshine Band, returns to country radio with brand new single, ‘Black and White.’ The song, from their 2012 release, Beer for Breakfast, was re-worked into a duet with Angaleena Presley, of Pistol Annies fame, and pairing her voice with JB Patterson was a fantastic move!

“Angaleena is just the coolest, most down-to-earth girl, so we thought it would be perfect to do this song as a duet,” said frontman JB Patterson via a press statement. Presley added, “JB’s music is playfully and sometimes painfully honest. As soon as I heard ‘Black and White,’ I knew we’d work well together.”

While written from the perspective of a traveling musician whose time away from home is creating tension in his relationship, the emotions in the song are universal – nothing is ever clear-cut, relationships are nuanced, and “you’ve gotta read between the lines.”

The song is available in iTunes (US link) and you can read even more about the song in the press release below:

The two spent a whole day in the studio in Nashville tracking vocals and crafting the song into a true duet. This version is closer to how Patterson originally intended the song, and is more textured than the album version. The song was originally written in third person where Patterson is “basically telling a story about a girl and a guy [who’s] always on the road– times get hard and put strains on the relationship.” Presley and her husband are both in the music industry, and she said she’s “lived both sides of this story.” “You have to learn to let go of the conventional rules,” she admitted. Patterson and Presley went through each verse together, intertwining the parts to create a story from two perspectives. “Instead of third person, now it’s first person where the girl is telling the story of the girl and the guy is telling the story of the guy, which was the way I had intended it to be from the beginning,” Patterson said.

The two really connected musically, and look forward to writing something original together soon. “It’s exciting and always fun to try new things. For whatever reason it seemed pretty effortless, and I think that shows in the actual audio itself,” Patterson said. Presley agrees. “JB is hilarious, honest, and eager to make good music. His personality is right up my ‘creative’ alley and I think we’re going to have a blast when we’re running around Texas in November,” she says. In addition to a week-long radio tour, Presley plans to join JB and the Moonshine Band for a run of special guest appearances called the Black and White Tour, with a concluding headlining slot at Billy Bob’s Texas on Nov. 15.
