On Friday evening, a light snow slowly began to fall, but things inside 1884 Lounge were just heating up. Drake White took the stage to perform to an intimate group of about forty people. The crowd wasn’t big in number, but they were big in spirit. Ninety percent of the audience knew every word to every song. The single people were dancing in front of the stage and the couples were rocking one another.

Drake performed his single, ‘The Simple Life,’ along with a slew of other originals and even a few covers. The Band’s ‘Up on Cripple Crick’ paid lovely tribute to the late Levon Helm and Drake even pulled off a great rendition of ‘What’s Up?’ by 4 Non Blondes – no easy feat.

Oh, can we just take a moment to celebrate Samuel Damewood? Samuel is Drake’s extremely talented fiddle player. Words cannot describe how good this guy is. There were moments when I literally could not stop smiling because he was creating melodies that were so beautiful or absurd – in a good way.

I also had the chance to meet Drake after the show. His personality matches his talent – both are solid gold. After commenting on what a great show he put on, Drake said, “It doesn’t matter how big the crowd is, the show is always the same.”

The man speaks the truth. I can vouch for it. The first time I saw Drake play was in October at Delta Country Jam in Tunica, MS. There were over 1,000 people in the crowd at that time, but his performance on Friday night had just as much energy. He’s an extremely talented, gracious performer whose positivity is infectious. I simply cannot wait to see him again.

Fortunately, I’ll have that opportunity very soon. Drake is set to play 1884 Lounge again on March 14.

If you’re in the Memphis area, do not miss him. If you aren’t, see if he’s playing near you.
