It’s an exciting time for Meghan Linsey. She is setting out on her solo career with the release of her new single, ‘Try Harder than That.’ The song is taken from her upcoming EP, and I caught up with her at the recent video shoot.

A beautiful garden in East Nashville was the scene for a southern-style party, complete with trucks, bonfires, dixie cups, and hundreds of fireflies as extras. I was warmly welcomed by Meghan’s parents (and two very excited dogs!) and we watched the crew in action as the new song played over the speakers.

On ‘Try Harder than That,’ Meghan takes on the portrayal of women in many of today’s country songs. It seems that all it takes is a “hey, girl!” to get a woman to drop what she is doing and hop into a guy’s truck. Not so with the character here – “to get a girl like this, you’re gonna have to try harder than that.”

“We only wrote it a month ago,” Meghan explained. “I wrote it with Corey Crowder and James Otto, and the idea was to write a “bro-country” song but make it empowering to women.

If you enjoy a dig at the dudebros with their endless line of trucks and cold beers, the song sparkles with humor. But it was not the writers trio’s intent to go on the attack. “A lot of those guys releasing those songs are my friends!” Meghan laughed, “It wasn’t our plan to bash that style of music, but more to write a “I am woman, here me roar!” song.”

“You have to make bold moves to get noticed, especially as a woman,” she continued, talking about the lack of female artists on country radio. “There are few really being honest and the goal is always for me to make a statement and be different and bold. I think people can see through it when you’re not being honest so hopefully that will resonate with audiences.”

After the Steel Magnolia years, Meghan is now pursuing her own vision. Creative freedom is a new thing for her and she is noticeably excited about sharing her music with her fans. “It’s nice to be able to branch off and write the songs I want to write, and not have anybody to answer to but myself. I feel like the fans will hear that in the music.”

In country music, radio support is still crucial but she didn’t set out to chase it. “We didn’t really know what the EP was going to be so we weren’t thinking about what radio would play,” she admits. “We did tweak things to make it work but all the songs came from an honest place. Tyler Cain is an up-and-coming producer, and even the guys playing on it, we’re all up-and-coming and young. The goal was to make a really good record and write about everything I have been through the last 3 years. It’s a different sound than what people have gotten used to from Nashville because it’s not the same session players and the same producers.”

As for the video shoot itself, “It’s really fun!” Meghan said enthusiastically. “It’s all my friends together, and the director is up-and-coming too. It feels like it’s all of our shot, and if this works, it will be good for everyone.”
