Single Review – All Your Life – The Band Perry

Following smash hit ‘If I Die Young’ and just-missed-#1 ‘You Lie,’ country music trio The Band Perry returns with romantic tune ‘All Your Life.’

Opened with banjo, mandolin and steel guitar, ‘All Your Life’  starts out strong. The simple lyrics have the girl asking if the object of her affection would do just about anything she requests, using two short, poetic verses. By contrast, she declares in the chorus that, really, she doesn’t want anything but him.

Usually, I like simple songs, the combination of instruments used here, and Kimberly’s vocals. But here all the elements are just not clicking into place. The aforementioned juxtaposition in the lyrics is nice, but there is so little substance in this story, almost to the point of there not being a point at all.

Throughout the song, Kimberly never sounds fully comfortable and resorts to oversinging the chorus and some strange phrasing choices. All three problems here, lyrics, vocals and phrasing, are at their height in the bridge, by which time I find myself having switched off. ‘All Your Life’ fails to hold my attention for long; there is just not enough song here. I have always felt these lyrics would be better served in a mid-tempo tune.

The Band Perry remain nevertheless one of the most exciting new country acts of the last few years so I sincerely hope country radio will not waver in their support.
