Having an EP and single released barely three years after first picking up a guitar is impressive. Even more so when the artist in question is only 15 years old. Idaho native MacKayla Hunter was taught her a few guitar chords by her father when she was 12 and she has not looked back since. Now, her new single ‘Bitter and Sweet’ has been released to radio.

‘Bitter and Sweet’ deals with the emotional struggle of knowing the guy is no good for you but yet not being able to walk away. The lyrics are kept simple and devoid of any melodrama. However, the lack of detail about the person addressed makes it sound more generic than it could be.

The phrasing is spot on, switching between self-assured and vulnerable. MacKayla has a naturally soft and warm voice and she uses it well here. The only blemish is her tendency to overpronunciate, many words sound very sharp.

‘Bitter and Sweet’ is all about showing MacKayla’s potential. And she has plenty. Her very mature outlook on life will stand her in good stead as she develops her writing, playing and singing. If she can make a simple song like ‘Bitter and Sweet’ sound this charming, this is not the last you will hear from her.
