Songwriters: Charlie Worsham, Marty Dodson, Ryan Tyndell

He may be new to country radio but Charlie Worsham has already achieved more than many do in their career. He first played at the Ryman Auditorium aged 10, and made his Grand Ole Opry debut when he was 12. After years of building a reputation as a multi-instrumentalist, Worsham is embarking on a solo performance career by releasing his debut single, ‘Could It Be.’ It is a very pleasant single and a good choice for a debut. Hopefully the song will start Worsham of on a career which will have him created many more songs like this.*

On ‘Could It Be’ we hear the morning-after-the-night-before thoughts of a guy who saw going out for drinks with “just a friend” turn into something more. Surprised by his own feelings, he now wonders ‘is this love, or could it be.’ A hopeful romantic, he is prepared to take a chance as he sings ‘who knows we might go down in flames / but then again I might just change your name.’

An accomplished songwriter (he co-wrote Dierks Bentley‘s ‘Heart of a Lonely Girl’), Worsham penned the song with two of his colleagues at ole, Marty Dodson and Ryan Tyndell. While there is nothing particularly innovative here, the trio kept it simple, resisted romantic cliches, and created a pretty irresistible tune.

The simplicity carries over into the arrangement which, while layered, maintains a slightly rootsy core. Instead of drowning the chorus in heavy guitars, a gentle banjo line appears. Guitar and banjo accents are used throughout, adding just a few notes here and there, leaving Worsham’s voice sitting nicely on top. It is a break from the over-compressed rock songs littering country radio and I hope to see a simple song with a simple country music arrangement do very well indeed.

‘Could it Be’ will impact country radio on January 14.

* And Berklee, if it does, I think this should take care of those six credits he is still missing.
