Songwriters: Big Kenny, ChessBoxer, Chebacca

Big Kenny has shown a willingness to blur the lines between genres, first as part of Big & Rich, and now with his new project Electro Shine.

The project’s first single, ‘Dance Upon The Solid Ground’ features the talents of not only Big Kenny on the vocals, but string duo ChessBoxer, and producer Chebacca. We start with some bluegrass riffs that are fused with a 4-on-the-floor dance beat, while Big Kenny’s choir-like gang vocals ride up over the top. Lyrically the song isn’t much to talk about. There are a few mantras involving peace, love, truth, and a few twists on lines from Don McLean’s ‘American Pie,’ but you’re not going to find anything life changing. Still, they make for good sing-along fodder.

At about 2:40, the song’s inevitable breakdown happens and what crops up after is the song basically doing its own remix. It’s more electro than country with shimmering synths, and a beat that’s more deadmau5 than Waylon at this point, but there’s a fantastic guitar solo buried in there too for those looking for some ear candy.

In all, I think the song’s worth listening to because it’s possibly the first honest foray into “electro country,” and as a fan of both genres, I think it’s important. In this case, it’s not fully formed, but the first take on almost anything usually isn’t. With the rise of EDM (electronic dance music), and country’s willingness to embrace trends, I feel like you can almost expect more like this. And who knows, maybe someday soon we’ll see Skrillex remixing Dierks Bentley or Blake Shelton covering Daft Punk (although even I’ll admit it’s highly unlikely!)
