Duo Florida Georgia Line saw their career explode over the last few months following their signing with Republic Nashville. They are looking to follow up the immensely successful debut single with ‘Get Your Shine On.’

On the surface, repeat success is possible as this is basically the same song. However, ‘Get Your Shine On’ lacks most of the elements which made ‘Cruise’ a hit. ‘Shine’ tells no story, relies even more on hackneyed rhymes and phrases (‘slide that sugar shaker over here’), and most importantly lacks the charm that made their debut single a guilty pleasure for many. It is a shame as this foursome of Big Loud Shirt songwriters is capable of much, much more than lyrics like this:
Homemade jar, lemon drop, take a sip.
Don’t stop girl, you know I love it when you get your shine on
‘Cause you and me be rocking all night long

Along with the continued assault on English grammar, ‘Shine’ just has nothing to say and therefor nothing to connect with. A meaning-free party song can be fun, but this is done in such a self-serious way, as partly evidenced by Tyler’s unnecessarily forced enunciation, that the tune gets in its own way. It does sound great with a much less intrusive production, though the mellow rhythm which gave ‘Cruise’ its laid-back groove feels a little languid here.

Republic Nashville has proved it can work songs to radio as if by magic, and I have no doubt this will play well to the duo’s college-age constituency. There is a lot to be said for striking the iron while it’s hot but I hope to see this duo outgrow this type of material soon.

‘Get Your Shine On’ is at country radio now and available digitally via iTunes.
