Single Review – ‘Gettin’ Married’ – Joanna Smith

On new single, ‘Gettin’ Married,’ Joanna Smith ridicules her girlfriends for choosing to settle down and start families. She’d rather continue to party and complains that ‘this being maid of honor’s keeping me from making out.’
She might not have to worry about that for much longer as after this, the woman in the song might not have many girlfriends left. The whiny phrasing and self-satisfied attitude in the vocals do not help this song in the slightest. With not a hint of self-deprecating humor in the lyrics, this ends up sounding like the whining of a petulant, emotionally immature girl who acts out now that she’s feeling left behind as her friends settle down.
The production has far too much music in the background, including a manic piano and some lines of fiddle added in to remind you this is a country song.
This doesn’t have to be a tragedy for Joanna Smith. A funny novelty song is always a risk, particularly if it’s not funny. Hopefully for her, future singles will consist of much better material.
