Texas group Randy Rogers Band is preparing a new album, and its first single is ‘One More Sad Song.’

With producer Jay Joyce, the band is setting off in a slightly different direction, embracing a more mainstream, pop-country sound. Sparsely populated verses put the focus on Rogers’ despairing protagonist. The open production on the choruses provides a nice contrast, but it does push the vocals a little too far back. Bucking the Music Row loud-guitars trend – as Joyce also successfully did with Little Big Town‘s ‘Pontoon’ – this single houses a nice surprise by way of Brady Black’s fiddle solo.

Both fearing and anticipating that this relationship will end as a sad song, the lyrics are all inner-dialogue; self-blame, doubt and insecurity are all handled well with the unanswerable questions that situation brings up. With two short-ish verses, the song leans heavily on its chorus. It’s strong enough to keep this afloat, especially when it comes after this second verse.

How will I live without you?
Who will I be in these shoes?
Once I’ve lost all that I can lose
Even if you forgave me
I don’t know if I could make it
But that’s our whole problem maybe

While Randy Rogers Band sounds stronger when they’re allowed to be a little grittier, ‘One More Sad Song’ could be the tune that helps them branch out into more heartland country.
