Josh Turner is a curious phenomenon in today’s country music landscape. Highly respected by his peers, and a Grand Ole Opry member, he is consistently ignored by award shows. When you take a poll of which country singers most radio listeners can readily name, his name might not even be mentioned. And yet, in 2012, he managed to close the year with the most played country song, the delicious ‘Time Is Love.’
Turner starts a new album era this fall, and the first taste is the mid-tempo ‘Lay Low.’
“I wanna drive until my cell phone runs out of range,” Turner starts off this ‘let’s forget the world for a while’-song. The subject matter is in no way new, but it is revisited by way of some lovely imagery – “I wanna find a front porch railing / prop up my traveling boots.”
The song finds the line between sounding contemporary and still holding on to tradition. It is a blend Turner and producer Frank Rogers perfected on the previous two albums, and it is great to see that Turner is holding steady. And of course, all of this is delivered in his confident low baritone.
‘Lay Low’ may not reach the heights or longevity of ‘Time Is Love’ or ‘Why Don’t We Just Dance,’ but it is a pretty good bet for a top 10 hit.
