After a disappointing radio run for the extremely excellent ballad ‘Someone Somewhere Tonight,’ Kellie Pickler sends the uptempo ‘Little Bit Gypsy’ to country radio.

Supported by upbeat finger-snap percussion she explains to her paramour that she’s not exactly the white-picket-fence type. It is delivered with such charm that it never really comes across as a warning. While Pickler certainly has the vocal chops to do so, she doesn’t pull out all the stops here. She sticks to singing the melody and doesn’t let any notes get bigger than the song needs. It leaves her delivery sounding more effective, especially in the sparkling chorus:

I’m a traveling circus train
Spinning weather vane
Going where the wind blows
I was born to chase the sun
Some horses gotta run
Yeah, I’m always gonna be
A little bit gypsy

With what, compared to most current radio mixes, sounds like alt-country rhythm guitar deep in the mix on the verses, this song has an old school country feel. It also sounds refreshingly lightweight with no overstuffed low end. Producers Frank Liddell and Luke Wooten placed Kellie’s voice front and center, and in the best country tradition made this about the lyrics and the melody.
