Nashville’s newest country duo isn’t so new. Comprised of singer-songwriter Jon Stone and Kristy Osmunson, formerly the fiddle-playing half of Bomshel, Curb’s new duo American Young has a headstart over their contemporaries. Being able to draw on combined years of experience and having learned many lessons, mostly from what didn’t work, leaves the duo free to create exactly the music they want to make. Still, for their first outing they chose an outside song written by Billy Montana, Kylie Sackley, and Jonathan Singleton.

The slightly Orwellian title, ‘Love is War,’ may lead you to believe there is no positive message to be expected here, but the song is a plea to not give up on the most important thing we have – love. It may not always be sunshine and roses but it is always worth fighting for:

Sometimes love is a white flag
Sometimes love is standing tall
Sometimes love is a feather
Sometimes a cannonball
But it’s worth, worth fighting for
Baby, sometimes love is war

Adding further to the star-power behind this project, Stone co-produced the song with award-winning engineer Justin Niebank, and singer-songwriter Lee Brice. The sparse, plucky acoustic arrangement with minimal percussion works extremely well. The trio also brought out the harmony by pulling back the music, especially after the bridge when the mix retreats to the background. It takes a lot of work to make music sound this effortless!

‘Love Is War’ is at radio now and I hope it finds significant support so we will get to hear much more from American Young.
