Michelle Turley’s new single, ‘Orange Blossoms in Phoenix,’ is a sweet, sentimental and honorable tale (conjured up by the scent of said springtime-blooming flowers) about her childhood memories of a loving mother and father and the impact their love had on her.
I try to live my life just like my mama and papa hoped that I would do.
The example they had set for me before they left this world is what comes through.
Sometimes when I pray at night, I talk to them just like they are in my room;
And I tell them that the years go by so quickly now, I’ll see them both real soon.
These heartfelt lyrics, set against some exceptional fiddle playing, slide guitar pickin’ and soft bass would seem like a match made in heaven. But, alas, it is not. Having to ear-strain, no less than a dozen times, through the massive overproduction to understand the words and “feel” the song, really takes away from the sentiment that they are trying to convey. Michelle’s dainty and super soft vocals, somewhat reminiscent of Dolly Parton but without the power, are just lost in the production. Turley is a talented songwriter, and possibly also singer, but I can’t tell from this release which pairs her with the wrong music.
