Pulling a sixth single from the hugely successful Speak Now album, Taylor Swift goes the simple route. ‘Ours’ is an innocent, girl-meets-boy love letter aimed squarely at her main demographic.

In ‘Ours,’ the girl daydreams about her boy and has an internal dialogue about the challenges their young love might face. The premise isn’t new territory in the least, but the reason it works here is the sharp writing which lifts up this moment-in-time song. With an opening of ‘Elevator buttons and morning air/Strangers’ silence makes me want to take the stairs’, Swift sets the scene beautifully. There is an expert use of language here, including each time changing up the chorus just enough to give it slightly different meaning. ‘Ours’ is so irresistibly sweet you can even forgive it a few cheesy lines like ‘And any snide remarks from my father about your tattoos will be ignored/’Cause my heart is yours’

The acoustic guitar and piano underscored arrangement give this a folk song feel. It’s the type of song where Swift’s, as usual, thin vocals do no harm. The songwriting is superb and, if she insists on performing the material herself, then, this is the way to do it.
