Single Review: Pills – Tracy Lawrence

One important function of music is to provide social commentary, serious when it needs to be, but perhaps most effectively with a dose of humor. Country music in particular seems to excel at this.
Tracy Lawrence returns to radio with ‘Pills,’ the second single taken from his 2011 album, The Singer. Co-written with long-time collaborator Phil O’Donnell, the song calls out society’s over-dependency on a quick pharmaceutical fix with some sharp, witty lyrics. Medication is sometimes necessary, of course, but watch any commercial break’s flood of quick cures for just about everything (followed by a long list of the side-effects!) and you’ll understand where the songwriters were getting their inspiration.
The acoustic arrangement and the barely-straight-faced delivery keep this song light and cheerful, making it a perfect candidate for a radio hit.
