Ahead of the release of his full-length debut later this year, Streamsound Records artist Austin Webb sends second single ‘Slip on By’ to country radio.

Though the press material describes it as “a sentimental ballad that stresses the value of time and not living in regret,” upon closer inspection the lyrics seem to address the value of not being self-involved and noticing the people in your life. Every missed moment described by the narrator centers on not having paid attention to the needs of those close to him. Hopefully, with this lesson learned, his younger fishing buddy will fare better.

Drawing as much on his country as his soul influences, Webb delivers. There are some weaknesses in the writing, but with such a confident performance, Webb squeezes the maximum emotion out of it. Both the story and the delivery crescendo in the bridge:

I shook the old man’s hand
And I thanked him and I drove home
As fast as I could go, just to let her know
That I need her, that I love her
That I’m never gonna let another moment like this
Slip on by

Producer Byron Gallimore keeps the music away from the vocal and positions Webb’s voice right in the center. With all the right elements lined up, let’s hope country radio is ready to hear material of this kind.
