The past week belonged to Taylor Swift. Her new album, Red, enjoyed the highest first-week sales in a decade when it was purchased an astounding 1.208 million times last week in the U.S. Needless to add that the record tops the Billboard 200 all-genre album chart this week.

According to the number-crunchers at Nielsen SoundScan that is the highest total since Eminem sold 1.322 million copies of The Eminem Show in 2002.

For those who want the numbers broken down, Billboard reports that iTunes was the main point of sales; the digital download service sold nearly 465,000 copies of the album – and yes, that’s another record. Target, which distributed an exclusive extended version, shifted 396,000 copies. You guessed it, that’s a record for that retailer too. Amazon.com contributed around 16,000 copies to the total, and Swifts deal with the Papa John’s pizza stores got her around 8,000 sales.

Make of this album what you will but the numbers do not lie. It’s a smash hit.
