Broadcast live from the Loveless Cafe barn, Music City Roots is a two-hour radio show celebrating the cornucopia of music alive and well in Nashville today. Spanning country, americana, bluegrass, folk, western swing, rockabilly and more, the evenings are packed with high quality performances.

Wednesday night, March 7, I went to go see my bluegrass friends, The Roys, and the phenomenal David Olney.

For The Roys, it was their very first appearance on the show; hopefully the first of many. The duo filled their 20-minute set with four songs off their excellent 2011 Lonesome Whistle album, opening with ‘Nothing I Can Do About it Now,’ a high-energy tune that works so well live. It was followed by current single ‘Trailblazer,’ a follow-your-dreams anthem, title track ‘Lonesome Whistle’ and the set was closed with the lead-off single ‘Coal Minin’ Man.’ If you like your music authentic, uplifting and fun, you need to check out The Roys. When David Olney plays, it’s hard to pay attention to anything else. That is assuming you would even want to. His performance is exuberant and his songs and presence always fill the entire room. The prolific and respected multifaceted singer-songwriter opened his 6-song set with ‘God-Shaped Hole’ and followed with two new songs, ‘Barabbas,’ and ‘Brains.’ Both can be found on the upcoming EP, The Stone, due out March 20. Olney was accompanied by his excellent band: Dan Seymour (standup bass), Sergio Webb (guitar), Jack Irwin (drums). The performance was completed with ‘In the End Is the Beginning,’ ‘Go Down Dupree,’ and ‘Girl Up on the Hill.’ To say I was impressed (again) is an understatement. Check the schedule on www.davidolney.com, and find the show nearest you. You won’t regret it!
