It is one of those entertainment industry mysteries why Little Big Town has not yet really broken through and achieved consistent chart success. One of the reasons might be that the quartet hasn’t shied away from originality; a quality not always rewarded at country radio. The new single, ‘Pontoon,’ surely has the potential to divide audiences.
The song is not more ambitious than a description of a lazy summer day spent on the water, and Karen Fairchild’s near-drowsy interpretation fits this perfectly. It houses plenty of cute lines which I will leave for listeners to discover themselves. So far, so good. The echoey Jay Joyce production is another matter. Arguably the best thing about Little Big Town are the tight harmonies, so why a production which doesn’t bring that out? It is the only element of this single I have a problem with and if country radio programmers can see past that, ‘Pontoon’ could do very well on the summer playlists.
