Michigan is home to Great Lakes, the Detroit Lions and a helluva country star. That’s right, the oh-so-talented (and chiseled) Frankie Ballard hails from none other than Battle Creek, Michigan.

Thirty-one year old Ballard was formerly signed to Reprise Records with whom he released his first single ‘Tell Me You Get Lonely’ in 2010. Personally, I didn’t know much about Ballard until I was driving home from work about three weeks ago.

You see, I had been hearing this catchy song on the radio for some time, but I was always driving and couldn’t jot down the lyrics. I could not get the song out of my head. So the next time it came on, I pulled over and wrote the lyrics on a napkin: “Hell of a life.”

Many a Google search later, I realized it’s actually titled, ‘Helluva Life’. Who knew!

Naturally the lyrics reference six packs and KC lights, but the song feels a bit deeper than that. It feels like summer and the beginning of new love. It feels like the warm wind blowing through your hair along with the uncertainty of new beginnings wrestling with your heart.

We all have faith, and we all have hope, but we’re all a little lost in the same damn boat. It’s a helluva life.

Ballard, now signed with Warner Music, may be a late bloomer recognition-wise, but oh how he has bloomed. ‘Helluva Life’ is the first release from his debut album with Warner Music, Sunshine & Whiskey, which is scheduled for release on February 11, 2014.

Fellas, it’s the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for your lady, but please don’t be mad at me when she’s fallen in love with Ballard’s heavenly voice, smooth guitar sounds and rugged good looks.

You can pre-order Ballard’s album here. He’s also on tour through spring, find out if he’ll be near you.
