Tim McGraw knows his audience really well, and has always been good at figuring out what they will accept from him and what they won’t accept. To the outside observer ‘Truck Yeah’ may have seemed like a risk, but his live show audience embraced it fully, as I am sure he predicted they would.

With brand new single ‘Lookin’ for that Girl,’ McGraw is taking another risk and we’ll have to wait to find out if it will be accepted by his fans. The Entertainment Weekly website had the exclusive first listen and fans were, um, not all convinced by this song. Here’s a sampling of some of the comments left on that website.

It starts off well enough reader Paula saying: “LOVE it! What Tim can do with a song is simply AMAZING! Always my favorite music man!”

But then the polite criticism shows up as reader RickSantorum saying that “Lyrically and musically It’s a boring song. While I can appreciate the attempt to sound modern, all this is doing is piggybacking on a current trend that’s already come and gone.”

(That may be the one and only time I agree with someone named Rick Santorum…)

It’s mainly the very obvious use of Auto-Tune that’s under fire*. There’s sarcasm, from commenter Varmint Kong: “Unbelievably bad…I used to respect McGraw before he changed his name to Bieber. Sad,” and disbelief from Patrick: “What the hell is this??? Seriously??? I AM SO DISAPPOINTED! What’s he doing with that RNB crap, electronic beat, autotune, almost no guitars at all!!!”

Because this is the internet there is also a person who doesn’t understand how the music business works as Jennifer says, “Hideous (and I love Tim McGraw). He’s too old for this garbage. I’d rather him be irrelevant than spew out this kind of “music.” And of course there has to be at least one person speaking out in favor of it with a logical fallacy, the old Appeal to Celebrity: “I happen to like the new song! Everybody else that’s hating on Timmy should probably take a look in the mirror first because he is much more talented and successful than most of us here. That is all.”

Commenter Adam Drake probably speaks for a lot of people when he very simply asks: “Why is this country?”

But maybe McGraw was right afterall about his core fans, as Bortoldr says: “I’m a diehard fan, but the auto tune is unnecessary….doesn’t belong in country music….but won’t stop me from picking up the album or hitting his concert this year!!!”

* By the way, every single song on his more recent albums also had Auto-Tune on it too, it’s not inherently evil. It was just not this extreme and only used to make him sound better.
